Professor Michael Hayes Limerick University: Prof Hayes is a soil scientist and international expert on the use of specially produced charcoal to boost soil health and plant growth for food along the Amazon basin in South America from earliest times to the present day. He will give a presentation on what biochar is, how it works and how it can be made so to bring many benefits to communities from the very local to the truly global.
Dr Cordner Peacocke CARE Belfast: Dr Peacocke is an international expert in the engineering design of pyrolysis plants to produce heat, electricity and recently biochar at various scales in a clean and safe way. Pyrolysis is a technique of heating woody biomass without air so as to produce useful gases and charcoal. He will give a presentation of the kinds of stoves and plants currently under development with special attention to the impacts and benefits of a village-scale plant.
